About Us

The Dearne Advanced Learning Centre is a vibrant 11-16 comprehensive school just off the A1 near to Barnsley.

We have created a learning environment where young people thrive and move on to increasingly ambitious futures.  The relentless pursuit of high quality educational experiences for our children underpins the moral purpose to which all Dearne adults commit.  In short, a school of choice for students, their families and other adults wanting to work with us – a happy place to be.

Success, Determination and Ambition

Over the last few years, we have developed a positive and well respected reputation for improving the life chances for children who come from some of the most traditionally disadvantaged ex-mining communities in the north of England. Inclusive and unwavering in our approach, our core mission is to ensure that we eradicate for our students the blocks and barriers which have historically linked poverty and academic underperformance.

Success | The Dearne ALC
We hold the highest expectations for our students and do not apologise for our aspirations for them.

The Dearne is therefore a school ‘where great things happen’  (OFSTED 2014), where students and staff create inspirational and ambitious learning opportunities, where excellent leaders strive for greater successes and parents and carers join with us in supporting the children of The Dearne to excel.

Proud of who we are, proud of what we stand for and most of all, proud of our children, the Dearne demonstrates on a daily basis our Value words: Success, Determination and Ambition.
